Aalochana Resource Centre - Photo Archives

We have an interesting and varied collection of photographs. These include rare photos dating back to the early 1900s as well as contemporary ones on the women’s movement and women activists.
The old photos are from personal collections that have been donated to Aalochana’s archives. Notable amongst them are Gangutai Patwardhan’s entire collection and the Kamlakar- Awati collection.

The exhibition “Re-presenting Indian Women 1875-1947- A Visual Documentary” curated by Malvika Karlekar was held from 14-23 December 2001 in Delhi by the Centre for Women’s Development Studies. Photos from our archive formed part of the exhibition and later the book by the same name published by OUP in 2006. They have also been used by Aalochana and CWDS, Delhi in calendars.

The contemporary collection comprises photos taken at various occasions including workshops, training programmes, campaigns, demonstrations and lectures. We also have photos taken by Vidya Kulkarni for our calendars and a especially commissioned photo documentation of women activists in Maharashtra.

The copy right for all these photos rests with Aalochana. People wanting to use these photographs may contact us.
